Execution Conversion™
The proposal is written. The course is built. The manuscript has been revised again. When someone asks how the project is going, you have plenty to show them. What you can't show is the moment it reached the person it was for.
Jim Winner calls the recurring gap between substantial work and consequential external outcomes Productive Stasis. Execution Conversion is his companion name for the work of addressing that gap. Consequential Progress names the external result the work was meant to produce. Together they form his theoretical account of where work stalls and how it reaches a meaningful outside result. Execution Conversion applies that account to the choice of a target, the work needed to reach it, and the handoff that makes a response possible.
The framework makes one distinction that changes the conversation. Sometimes work is divided among several viable goals, and none becomes the one that reaches a customer, editor, or client. Winner calls that an alignment failure. Sometimes a goal is chosen and worked on seriously, but the work does not cross the point of external exposure. That's a conversion failure. Both can feel like hard work because they are hard work.
Related research examines the transition from intention to action. Webb and Sheeran's meta-analysis found that changes in intention did not translate into equally large changes in behavior. Winner's framework asks a further question about people who have already begun acting: when does their activity become an outcome someone else can respond to?
